Doing the right thing (for all my students)

Another nugget of advice that i have for all my students.

It is never easy to do the right thing. What students and young people face are the tremendous peer pressure from other friends when they try to attempt to do what is right. Young people, do not be afraid to do so! Stand up for what is right. Though others may laugh at you, you have a clear conscience as you know that what you are doing is right. Do not think that the majority is always right. Sometimes, the opposite is true instead.

Another thing is the choice of friends. As the saying goes 近朱者赤, 近墨者黑. How true is this saying! If you are able to overcome the peer pressure and make friends who are more academically inclined, i'm sure you will learn the good things from them, and your attitude towards learning will improve. If you choose to make the wrong friends, i'm afraid that its only a matter of time before you learn all the wrong things. Having said all those, i'm not asking you all to break away from those friends who influence you the wrong way. You can still be friends with them, but you need not be on too close terms with them. Win them over with your determination to study, and i think they will be in awe of you, rather than laugh at you.

In fact, all that what i am saying stems from my belief, which is Christianity. The world may think that those who are doing right are fools, but they are actually loved in the sight of God. That is why i am determined that all of you learn the right things and not the wrong things. Education is supposed to make you a better person both in head knowledge and in character. No use having a student who is smart but does not have a good character. I just hope those who have been falling behind can awake to their senses and think about the future ahead should you continue to wallow in your current bad state.

Words of wisdom (for all my students)

It is not easy being a student nowadays. When i was in secondary school about some 15 years back, i don't recall being so involved in school activities. I hope this advice doesn't come too late for all of you.

1. You need to be self disciplined in order to do well in studies. Do not succumb to your temptations, such as playing computer games, blogging and procrastinating your homework and doing it at the last minute. Perhaps some of you might find it overwhelming now that you are in sec sch, but this is all about managing your time well and we want you all to learn how to manage your own time. After all, you are growing up and its time for you all to learn to manage yourselves. Do seek advice and consult your teachers or classmates when you need help.

2. Prioritise what is important and needs to be done. Sometimes, you might realise you have a lot of homework. Do what is most urgent first and then do the rest. Most important and urgent thing to be done first, and then in descending order of importance and urgency. It does take a while to get used to it.

3. Consult others when in doubt. Feel free to approach the teachers after school if you need help. We are paid to assist you all in your studies. Otherwise, ask your other classmates who are doing well in the subject matter, or ask your siblings or parents if they are well equipped with the knowledge that you need. When in doubt, ask! Ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you (from the Bible).

4. Get some exercise once in a while if you feel unmotivated to study. Or you can have a short time of games to unwind you. Need not always be computer games. Do some reading to take your mind off studies for a while. I understand that exercise will release endorphins which will aid you in your studies. Also, it is good to keep fit while you can. You need a balanced lifestyle. Having said that, i do not encourage long hours in front of the computer as it will damage your eyesight ( i had to wear spectacles cos i played too much video games when i was in pri school. All my other family members do not wear spectacles. See what i mean?)

These are some little nuggets that i have for all of you. Back to studies for you! =)
